I helped healthcare company that consistently missed its targets shift into consistently beating its targets. I hoped another align teams who were running in different directions. I worked with yet another who couldn’t develop the discipline to set, align and follow clear goals. In each case, we used an agile implementation methodology that was created by Andy Grove at Intel and is now used by the likes of Google and other Silicon Valley unicorns: Objective Key Results (OKRs). OKRs work by aligning objectives to strategy, breaking larger goals down into smaller chunks of measurable milestones, prioritizing ruthlessly, driving outcomes in 90-day sprints, and running retrospectives to capture learning in continuous performance improvement.
